Hill and Moorland Leader Overview Mountain Training Lowland Leader

The Hill and Moorland Leader is often seen as a the benchmark qualification for organisations such as Duke of Edinburgh, Scouts and school teachers responsible for leading trips in the countryside. Completion of this National Governing Body award allows you to lead groups on day walks in the hill and moorland areas of the UK and Ireland.

Beyond the Edge are one of the UKs most experienced providers of Mountain Training courses and they are both highly informative and run by hugely experienced trainers. Importantly in our opinion, they are also fun and run in a friendly manner. We take great pride in the very high percentage of individuals who return for further courses.

Our base for the Hill and Moorland Leader course in the Peak District is highly accessible, being only two and a half hours from central London by train. In addition to being stunningly beautiful, it is brilliant for learning navigation and practicing skills. The mix of gentle valleys and woodland coupled with the featureless moorland plateaus of Kinder and Bleaklow allow us to tailor the course to the appropriate level.

These courses which we run regularly in the Peak District, are a wonderful opportunity to learn the leadership skills required to feel confident about taking people out walking even if you don’t work in the outdoors.

The one day Camping Leader scheme covers the additional skills of supervising expedition groups at campsites. It is an optional add on.

Beyond the Edge are committed to ensuring that everyone has equal opportunity to attend our courses.  If you feel you may need additional support to attend, please do let us know so we can facilitate this.  Mountain Training have a useful document which can be found here.

Please note there are minimum experience requirements for attending both Hill and Moorland Leader training and assessment. Further details are found under the eligibility tab of the courses. Prior to attending training you should have recorded on DLOG twenty Quality Hillwalking Days (QHDs).

“I massively enjoyed the course [Hill and Moorland Leader Training] – and my huge thanks to Chris and Alex for your tireless commitment. I learnt a great deal, and now have a clear view of my strengths and weaknesses, and what I need to work on before assessment”. Craig, Oxfordshire
