Hurrah! we are happy to announce that we now run the Climbing Wall Development Instructor (CWDI) training courses and assessments. You can book your CWDI here, or read on for more information…
What is the CWDI?
The CWDI is a nationally recognised qualification, administered by Mountain Training. In this course, you’ll learn to help other climbers develop beyond the basic skills on an indoor/outdoor artificial climbing wall, including teaching other climbers to lead climb.
Why do it?
Teaching climbers to develop and to lead climb is hugely rewarding as you can help them to progress toward independence in the indoor setting. Moreover the course will help you to evolve as a climber and reflect on your own instructing, helping you to improve your style and practices.
How does it work?
In the same vein as other Mountain Training leadership qualifications, the award consists of a 1 day training course followed by a period of consolidation and preparation for the assessment (also 1 day). The length of the consolidation period depends on the candidate, however Mountain Training recommend a minimum of 6 months between the training and assessment.
Who can do it?
The CWDI training course is for anyone who has already passed their CWI (Climbing Wall Instructor) or RCI (Rock Climbing Instructor) Assessment. You’ll also need to have completed the following prerequisites ahead of your training course:
- 50 led routes.
- Climbed at 3 different major climbing walls.
- Belayed a lead climber 50 times.
- 25 lead routes at grade F6a on indoor climbing walls.
- 20 supervising sessions after passing either Climbing Wall Instructor or Rock Climbing Instructor qualifications.
