Monday 22nd of April is Earth Day! To celebrate we thought it would be useful to highlight the ideas behind 1% For the Planet and let our lovely course attendees know where we send the 1%.
Earth Day 2024
The first Earth Day was on April 22nd 1970 and has mobilised over 1 billion people annually in support of protecting the planet. Earth Day has since evolved into the largest civic event on Earth. Earth Day is a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability.
This year the focus is on plastic pollution, with the campaign Planet vs Plastic.
1% For The Planet
1% for the Planet is a global network with thousands of businesses and environmental organisations working together to support people and the planet. Businesses pledge to give 1% of their annual sales to environmental causes.
1% for the Planet was founded in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard and his clothing company Patagonia became the first business to commit 1% of annual sales to the environment. To date $620 million has been donated to environmental causes.
A unique feature of the 1% for the Planet concept is that businesses choose their own organisation or cause to support and then donate directly to that organisation or cause.
At Beyond the Edge we choose to donate our 1% directly to the British Mountaineering Councils (BMC) Access and Conservation Trust (ACT). The Access and Conservation Trust is a registered charity that aims to promote sustainable access to cliffs, mountains and open countryside by facilitating education and conservation projects across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
ACT aims to:
- Support rural access and conservation projects that protect access and promote sustainable use
- Educate and raise awareness of conservation issues
- Inform people about areas of ecological sensitivity
- Research the benefits and impacts of mountain recreation and tourism
- Train and support access and conservation volunteers
ACT will fund:
- Landscape Site Based Work
- Campaigns and Policy Development
- Rural Development Initiatives
- Sustainable Transport Initiatives
- Information Resources & Publications
- Research
- Training & Support for Access Volunteers
