“Hi Chris, I just wanted to say a massive thank you for an amazing four days. I still can’t believe what I did! Or rather, what you helped me achieve… I’m already eyeing up some of your other trips and will definitely recommend you to others.” S Murphy. Scrambling Course
“Just attended a 2 day ‘beyond the edge’ outdoor first-aid course at the Sunnywood Project (Bury). It was delivered by Chris. I’ve attended a lot of really good, beneficial, exciting, enjoyable courses. This was up there with the best of them and is certainly the best first aid course I’ve been on. The experience was enhanced by Chris’s style of delivery which mixed the seriousness of the subject with the correct level of humour/fun. It was definitely worth giving up a weekend for. Many thanks.” M Rowe. Outdoor First Aid.
“I just wanted to drop a line and say a big thank you for Saturday!
The group came back to the accomodation that evening raving about the experience (life changing), how much care was shown by you in running the day and how you adapted the day to meet the needs of the group.” M Choy Wanderers of Colour. Rock Taster.
“I attended the NNAS Gold Award / Advanced Navigation Course with Beyond the Edge. Alex (the instructor) was brilliant, he quickly ascertained what skills I already had and adapted the course to fill gaps in my knowledge. Techniques were explained clearly and challenges were set to test each skill; these built steadily in complexity over the two day course and this helped reaffirm and consolidate each approach. The night navigation element was particularly rewarding – it really puts a smile on your face when you find an elusive contour in the darkness using just pacing and a bearing! There was plenty of interesting conversation/debate too, Alex is very knowledgeable about the Peak District landscape and I learnt far more than just the intricacies of advanced navigation. I am keen to complete my Mountain Leader qualification and Beyond the Edge will be top of the list to provide the training!” Nick McQueen NNAS Gold.
“This course [Advanced and Expedition First Aid] is a great introduction to the factors you need to be aware of when planning an expedition. Practical, down to earth, and full of great hints and tips, all grounded in personal experience. The First Aid refresher on the basics was really useful those of us who don’t practice first aid regularly, and the advanced techniques were particularly enlightening. What is great is that Chris and the team show you how to cope in an emergency without having to drag the entire contents of a small hospital up the hill with you! Loved getting in there and practically applying the learning: I can never look at Tesco Finest chicken fillets the same ever again (and other day to day products that will surprise you with their hidden talents!). I can thoroughly recommend the course to anyone who is planning to walk away from the beaten track. A lot packed into a very informative course and as usual with Beyond the Edge, done with great skill and humour.’ Julia Hill. Advanced & Expedition First Aid.
“Intro to rock climbing was a brilliant course, our lovely instructor was very knowledgeable and we felt very safe whilst learning tons of new skills. Would highly recommend!” Charlotte Rock Climbing Introduction
“Thanks Chris, James and everyone at Beyond the Edge for putting together such a fantastic two-day outdoor first aid course. I learnt a huge amount with an inspiring bunch of people and had fun along the way. Whether you are an outdoors professional, looking to become one or simply enjoy being out in the hills, this course will give you the confidence to handle those situations that no-one wants to find themselves in.” Andy Outdoor First Aid
A great course. A really enjoyable 2 day course, with a brilliant instructor. We spent time at 3 different climbing areas covering gear placement, belays, abseils, seconding, lead climbing and more. I learnt a huge amount and the content was all tailored to my own experience and knowledge. Jamie. Learn to Lead
Thank you for a very challenging but thoroughly enjoyable learning experience. As usual the course was informative, relevant, effective and professionally run. I look forward to continuing my learning journey with Beyond the Edge in the future Thank you again, Alan. Advanced Navigation.
Your recent email reminded me to say thank you and wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year.
We completed a Bronze course just before lock down in March. Alex ran a course just for my wife Laura and I. This course has, despite all the troubles this year, enabled many adventures. We’ve seen the Solstice sunrise over the Peaks, completed the Isaac’s Tea Trail, walked the Beacons and the Lakes.
Once again many thanks. Karl & Laura
Having recently completed the Hill and Moorland Leader training with you I thought it appropriate to send a message saying how professional, relaxed and informative the course was. Chris is clearly an exceptional tutor and Joe was an excellent Leader for our group – incredibly patient, knowledgeable and approachable when questions or difficulties were encountered. In short – a truly fantastic experience! Will
Please pass on a big thank you to Sam from us all. We had a great time. Billy gave the day an 11 out of 10. Thanks to Sam for his patience and knowledge and making learning fun for the kids. Joi.
Just to say a huge thank you for the expert introduction to rock skills last weekend. The pace was just right, with quality tuition by Chris and plenty of opportunity to climb at the crag. Will certainly be back for more! Thanks to everyone behind the scenes too for putting this course together. Doris.
Just wanted to say thank you for a great weekend. I know that we were blessed with the weather but whatever the climate this would have been a great course. We had a great weekend of climbing and instruction and Alex has a real ability to just mix the two so that you feel you are having fun but getting educated at the same time.
This is the second course of I have done with Beyond the edge and I will be the first to recommend them to others. Richard.
I found the course and the instructor excellent. He was very friendly, patient and encouraging despite me feeling clueless for the first three days. I’d recommend this course to anyone hoping to get to the next level of scrambling. Adam.
We have had a brilliant day and Sam was fantastic. I would never have attempted Tryfan by myself and doing it with Sam has shown me just how much my children can safely adventure. He was great with the kids, they felt comfortable with him and was really good with my own limitations also. Loved the day, thank you so much. Jo.
Myself & Malcom both enjoyed and learnt so much the day we spent with Chris. We both really appreciated the support and guidance he provided us with….and patience he showed with our map reading skills throughout the day!!!
We will be back in touch in the future. Fi
After returning back to our cottage slightly wet I thought I’d send over a quick message about our day. Both Thomas and Jessica had a whale of a time, I’m am hoping that Hati’s ears recover from Jessica’s screeching, which was a sign of how much fun she was having. Massive thanks to Hati for making our day so much fun, she was absolutely brilliant with the kids and built their trust immediately. They both loved all the activities we did (as expected) but we were also very impressed with how Hati taught them the basics of tying knots and using the various other pieces of kit she had!!
Hati was also patient with us all as we took our first baby steps to climbing as a family and made sure we were all involved and challenged within our (relatively low level :-)) abilities!!!
Thanks again for organising the fab day, if we ever pop back down and do a bit more climbing we’d definitely be calling on you again!!! Steve & Lisa
I recently completed the Hill and Moorland Leader training course with Beyond the edge. A very professional approach to training that focused on the skills required for the qualification and the development / application of those skills. The staff running the course were very helpful and highly qualified. They emailed us after the course was complete encouraging us to get in touch if there was anything we were uncertain of. I will definitely by using this company when I get to doing the assessment part of the qualification. Joe
I booked my RCI assessment with Beyond The Edge and thought it was really good. I booked last minute but had all the information I needed. The assessor, Alex, was great and the assessment wasn’t stressful. Jessica
Just completed the Hill and Moorland training course with Chris . Have learnt so much and gained so much more confidence . All aspects of the course were well organised and presented in an enjoyable and informative way – could even say it was fun ! Thank you ! Liz

Fantastic time on the rock climbing taster day today with Chris and Joe at Stanage. Excellent, patient and clear tuition from the guys. Thoroughly enjoyed the day and can’t recommend highly enough. Tanya.
The night navigation course is a must for any serious hiker! Any fears of mine of what to do if stuck in mist or the light goes were dealt with in the four hours on the course last weekend. Chris was an excellent, relaxed and encouraging instructor, talking me through accurate pacing and timing, efficient use of a compass and head torch, also teaching me how to interpret the map and the surrounding terrain accurately. It felt great to learn from a pro and I came away with loads more confidence. I’d highly recommend this company to anyone. Thank you so much for all the brilliant tips and encouragement! Judy. Night Navigation.
Just a note to thank you for a great weekend in the hills – you really do deliver a top-quality learning experience and I certainly appreciate the skill involved in forging a collection of complete strangers with varying experience into an adaptive, cohesive group capable of having fun and learning – I take my hat off to you!
I’ve already started to recommend you to friends, and I hope they’ll benefit from your courses in the months to come. Geoff. Hill Skills.
I undertook a 2 day Silver level Navigation Skills Training with Alex. I am a novice Fell Runner and wanted to gain navigation skills to enter more demanding races. My aims were to increase my confidence in knowing where I was at any time in the middle of a never ending sea of heather on an exposed moor and then finding a way out of it using a map and compass!! Happy to say that I can now do that with confidence though there is always more to learn. Top tip – move around when trying to locate where you are as It’s often right behind you!! (Given it is the Pantomime season) and ask any question that comes to mind. Michael. Intermediate navigation.
“Chris, Alex and David at Beyond the Edge are extremely professional. Their knowledge and experience, which they are willing to share to the benefit of their course members, are excellent. Their approach to training is based upon understanding your needs and providing instruction to enable you to achieve both competence and confidence in your skills. Even the assessment was a supportive process. What’s more…. it was fun too. Thank you so much“. Anne. HML Training, HML Refresher Day, HML Assessment and a night navigation course.
First I would like to say what a great course. It is one of the best courses I have ever been on Ollie was first class. I didn’t think I would grasp things so quickly but the way the course was structured and presented made a pleasure to be there. Simon. Intermediate navigation.

“I was looking for some assistance with my navigational skills to help gain my Mountain Leader qualification. My first enquiry to Beyond the Edge by telephone was dealt with promptly and the options available to me and costs involved were clearly explained. I booked two days “one to one” training. On the first day we talked about my requirements and expectations and I was fully assessed on ability and experience so the training was bespoke and on target.
I was never made to feel out of my depth or that things moved too fast but I was appropriately challenged. There was plenty of time for discussion and learning with constant constructive feedback on my progress and hints and tips to improve my performance.
I found both days very enjoyable and finished feeling confident in my new skills and reassured about ability to complete the course. I consider the fee great value for money and I would highly recommend Beyond the Edge to anyone in a similar position requiring specific training or thinking of doing the entire Mountain Leader course” Simon, Norfolk.
