Multi-Pitch Climbing Introduction
A great opportunity for people with a little climbing experience to immerse themselves in climbing history and savour the views from the mountains as you discover climbing on longer routes i.e. multi pitch climbing!

Who is it for ?
To get the most from Multi-Pitch Climbing introduction you will have climbed outside on a number of occasions. You will leave understanding how to climb (and descend if required) longer mountain routes.
Multi-Pitch Climbing – Course Overview
On the course, you will learn the additional skills needed to be safe and enjoy the adventure of multi pitch climbing. Over the two days we will tackle some classic Eryri mountain routes at a grade suitable to you.
Don’t worry if the weather is bad, as we have a few cunning places that are at a lower altitude and invariably escape the rain yet give awe inspiring climbing.
Beyond the Edge are one of the UKs most experienced providers of training courses for hills and mountains and our courses are both highly informative and run by hugely experienced trainers. Importantly in our opinion, they are also fun and run in a friendly manner. We take great pride in the very high percentage of individuals who return for further courses.
Multi-Pitch Climbing – Course Format
The course will be flexible to get the most learning out of the prevailing weather conditions. Below is a rough outline of the course.
Day 1
9am. Introductions, us, you and the course before heading outside to a local crag.
- Equipment and how to use it.
- Basic skills recap.
- Guidebooks, route selection and the magic arts of route finding.
- Communication on the crag
- Climbing a multi-pitch route.
- Running belays and use of protection.
- Environmental concerns.
16:30 Close
Day 2
9am We meet and head straight out.
- Carrying equipment on harnesses.
- Head games and the psychology of fear
- Anchoring to the rock face.
- Stance management.
- Retreating from routes – planned and unplanned!.
- Double rope techniques
- Protecting traverses
16:00 Debrief and Close
Making a week of it
Many people ask if we run multi pitch climbing weeks. In simple terms, yes. Without a doubt this is the best way to experience the magnificent mountains that we are blessed with in the UK as it allows a variety of different styles of crag to be experienced, from quiet high mountain crags to café side test pieces. On our week courses, generally at least one day will be spent covering the skills and equipment required for harder scrambles. Please contact the office for more details.
