Welsh 3000s Challenge
The classic Welsh 3000s Challenge spread out over three days. With our expert knowledge, we guide you and, ease the logistics with shuttles to start and finish points. Despite taking three days this is still a serious challenge that needs both a high level of fitness and a head for heights.
This classic traverse of all the peaks in Wales above 3000ft is about 26 miles from the summit of Foel Fras to the summit of Snowdon. If you include the walk up Foel Fras and down from Snowdon its closer to 34 miles (55Km) and involves close to 3000m of ascent. By breaking it down into three sections it becomes type one fun rather than type two! The route over Crib Coch requires a good head for heights, and if you aren’t great at moving relatively swiftly on steep terrain, anything less than three days can be emotional. The route described below is traditional, but we may do variations or swap days around to accommodate the weather.
Beyond the Edge are one of the UKs most experienced providers of mountain experiences and courses. All of our small team are both hugely experienced and highly qualified and will make the challenge fun and rewarding. We take great pride in the very high percentage of individuals who return for further adventures and courses.
Welsh 3000s Challenge Format
In outline:
Day 1 – We meet at 8:30 in Llanberis and, after a quick brief, drive to Abergwyngregyn to head up into the Carneddau. This is the longest day of walking and we will be on the hill for around 8 – 10 hours. Our first summit is Foel Fras and we then stay high all day finishing seven summits later with Pen yr Ole Wen and about 22km walked.
Day 2 – After a good nights sleep, we are ready to tackle the Glyders. Tryfan is our first peak before we reach the main ridge of the Glyders where we can enjoy great views out to Anglesey and beyond. We finish on Elidir Fawr with a further five peaks ticked and 16 km walked.
Day 3 – With only three peaks and 13km today might seem easy. We do however take on Crib Coch. Famous for being an airy scramble, we take our time and finish triumphantly on Snowdon, before descending to Llanberis for a well deserved cuppa (or something stronger!)

Fitness Level
This challenge is moderately hard. You need to be mountain fit not gym fit. Big biceps and amazing abs aren’t a lot of use when your legs are screaming. So put on your big girl (or boy) pants and get out walking or running. And if its raining while your training its just a bit more realistic… Some handy hints to help you prepare are in the Joining Instructions.
