Managing Fear in your Clients

A highly practical, 3 hour workshop covering how to manage fear in your clients.

How to prepare them (and yourself) and, how to cope if your ninja preparation isn’t quite as good as you wished. Delivered by a psychologist and a hugely experienced outdoor instructor.

This is not a mental health first aid course.

Who is it for ?

Whilst primarily aimed at outdoor instructors, it is suitable for anyone who takes others into the outdoors.

Managing Fear in your Clients – Course Overview

Fear is one of the larger hurdles on the road to success. Whilst elements of fear apply equally to an important presentation in front of a large audience and falling of a cliff, how you as an outdoor professional manage the situation will be different.

During the workshop, we gain a basic understanding of the “fight or flight” response and teach some simple, highly practical models you can use to explain this natural phenomenon to your clients.  Equipped with this basic understanding of fear, we look at range of different ways we can manage it within a group / individual to get the best outcome.

Whilst we normally associate anxiety with heights and scrambling / climbing different individuals have different triggers.  We learn how to spot the early signs of anxiety, what we can say and where to position ourselves to prevent in worsening.

If there is a significant fear response from a client, we learn what to do and what to say (and importantly what not to do or say).  How to manage the overall situation and coach the individual. We also look at how to constructively draw out the best aspects to optimise performance.

We also make sure we all understand the difference between coaching and counselling and when we need to signpost greater support to clients.
