For decades the Silva Type 4 compass has been the choice of Instructors, Guides, mountain leaders, serious walkers and navigators. However now Silva have redesigned the Type 4 and renamed it the Expedition.

The base plate of the Expedition is the same size and has a magnifier, grippy silicon feet, the usual 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 romer scales and a 1:40,000 scale for use on the BMC British Mountain Maps. The direction of travel arrow has been redesigned. The bezel is thicker and should be easier to use while wearing gloves.

The Expedition has some new features including a built clinometer for measuring slope angles. The detachable lanyard has 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scales printed on it for measuring distances on your maps.
This the perfect accompaniment on our Mountain Leader Award courses where accurate navigation in poor weather and at night is essential. We would also recommend it for our Hill and Moorland Leader courses and our navigational courses. Much cheaper ones are available, but we see them break repeatedly and navigation in the dark without a compass can be quite challenging.
We always say that failing to plan is planning to fail, so get this cracking compass now and ditch the one with a slight bubble that points in 6 different directions towards North – you will thank us.
