Patagonia Baggies Review
Patagonia have from their inception manufactured items of clothing that remain in their collection for decades and become icons of the brand. Classic examples include Stand Up Shorts, the Snap T Pullover and Baggies Shorts.
Patagonia released the ‘Baggies’ in 1982. Designed by Yvon Chouinard the Baggies have remained relatively unchanged in terms of design over the coming decades.
The design is simple but effective. Made of quick drying nylon, they have two front pockets with mesh corners for draining water after a swim and single back pocket with a snap closure. They have a elasticated waist and a draw cord closure. There is a mesh lining that eliminates the need for under crackers.
I bought my first pair as a teenager in the 80’s and wore them to distruction. More recently looking for some new shorts that will do everything I decided to try out the Baggies again after a 25 year gap.
There are three versions of the Baggies shorts availible in the UK. Standard 5″, Longs 7″ and Lights 6.5″. I chose the Longs in a lovely Tidepool blue colour.
As soon as I started wearing them I remembered why I wore then so much all those years ago. They are pretty much the perfect all round short. In this incredble run of sunny weather here in the UK I’ve worn them just about everyday for climbing, walking, casual urban cycling, bird watching and hanging around in the garden. Jump in a river, lake, pond or sit in a paddling pool in the garden and when you get out they will dry nice and quickly.
The main change in these shorts is the most important one; they are now made of 100% postconsumer recycled nylon made from recycled fishing nets to help reduce ocean plastic pollution.
I have no doubt that this perfect summer weather will end soon and we will all go back to wearing long trousers but until then I’ll be wearing Patagonia Baggies for just about everything I do in the outdoors.
