Classic Snowdonia Walks – Format
We meet on the Sunday evening to say hello and make sure everyone is ready and raring to go for the Monday. Over dinner we get to know one another and discuss the week and of course the all important weather!
In outline:
Day 1 – We meet at 9 am and after looking at the weather we hatch our plan for the day. We will have a quick session on equipment and emergency procedures before heading out. We often try and start gently. Moel Siabod is delightful and mixes the turbulent waters of the Llugwy (with an outside chance of spotting an otter) with the tranquility of the ancient oak woodlands, before winding through the remains of ancient slate workings to the summit and panoramic views. As on most days we aim to be back down by about 4;30pm.
Day 2 – Depending on the weather, we may head up Tryfan, voted the most loved mountain in the UK. Easy scrambling with mountain goats to accompany us (smelt often before they are seen!) may take us along the N ridge and past the famous Canon stone, before a joyous romp up lovely rock to the summit. Here we can make our acquaintance with Adam and Eve, the two stone monoliths which guard the summit. A gentle descent past ‘Australia’ leads us back to the road.
Day 3 – Today we may take a wander up Snowdon. With eight well known routes and several other variations, there is sufficient variety to keep most people happy.
Day 4 – We may head into the Carneddau, home of the Carneddau ponies. Either a lovely horseshoe taking in Pen yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd and Carnedd Llewellyn (named after the last independent Prince of Wales and his brother). Or, if we are all brimming with energy a rip roaring traverse traverse of the Carneddau from Aber to Ogwen.
Day 5 – With our last day it’s often hard to decide where to go. If energy levels are low we may head for Cnicht and summit the Welsh Matterhorn. Alternatively, we can explore the more lofty peaks of the Glyderau and Y Garn. The choice is not quite endless, but there is certainly no shortage of options. We try and finish slightly earlier today so that people who are travelling home can get away before 5pm
